Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced that the new Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health, located on the St. Elizabeths East campus, will officially open on April 15, 2025. This new state-of-the-art hospital is part of the District’s collaboration with Universal Health Services (UHS) to create a comprehensive, integrated health care system serving communities East of the River and beyond.
“Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center represents my promise kept to Ward 8 and to all DC residents,” said Mayor Bowser.
The hospital will enhance access to quality health care and complement existing facilities such as Cedar Hill Urgent Care GW Health and the Whitman-Walker Max Robinson Center, which opened in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Expanding Health Care Access in Wards 7 and 8
The $434.4 million medical facility will include:
- A 136-bed full-service hospital (expandable to 184 beds)
- Maternal health and delivery services featuring a Level II NICU
- A trauma center and ambulatory pavilion for clinics and physician offices
- A 500-car parking garage and a helipad for emergency transport
UHS will operate and maintain the hospital for the next 75 years while investing $75 million in health care infrastructure across Wards 7 and 8.
“This hospital is a key part of an integrated care network that ensures health equity for DC residents,” said Kimberly Russo, Group VP of Universal Health Services, DC Region and CEO of The George Washington University Hospital.
As part of this broader integrated care approach, the Fletcher-Johnson Freestanding Emergency Department will open in Ward 7 in 2027, further expanding access to emergency and specialized care.
