DHCF & Stakeholders Launching New Effort to Transform Maternal Health in the District

DC Receives 10-Year CMS Award to Advance Innovative Approaches to Maternal Health Care

In January 2025, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) had selected the District to participate in the Transforming Maternal Health (TMaH) Model to advance innovative approaches to meet the maternal health care needs of District residents enrolled in the Medicaid program. Over a 10-year period, the Department of Health Care Finance (DHCF) and 14 other state Medicaid agencies will develop and implement payment and care delivery initiatives to support a whole-person approach to maternal health from the prenatal period up to one year after pregnancy.

“This funding will help us connect more families to the resources and support they need for a healthy pregnancy and postpartum experience,” said Mayor Bowser. “When we invest in maternal health, we are investing in stronger families, healthier communities, and a brighter future for our city.”

Starting on April 15, 2025, the Maternal Health Advisory Group will meet virtually every third Tuesday from 11 am-12 pm. Maternal Health Advisory Group meetings are open to health care professionals, individuals with lived experiences, community organizations, and other interested parties. DHCF will convene this group monthly to gather diverse perspectives and guidance to develop a whole-person approach to perinatal care.
