VBC Learning Collaborative Spotlight: Unity Health Care Applies NHS
Unity Health Care is the largest network of community health centers in the District of Columbia, providing a wide range of health services across its practice sites. As part of the Integrated Care DC’s Value-Based Care (VBC) Learning Collaborative, Unity’s behavioral health team members are participating in the Care of Acute and Chronic Conditions track, focusing on preventing potentially avoidable hospitalizations for their patients. Specifically, Unity seeks to demonstrate how behavioral support can positively impact adherence and lifestyle changes like diet and physical activity to reduce the likelihood of congestive heart failure (CHF), resulting in unnecessary emergency room encounters and inpatient days.
DHCF and Stakeholders Launching New Effort to Transform Maternal Health in the District
DC Receives 10-Year CMS Award to Advance Innovative Approaches to Maternal Health Care
In January 2025, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) had selected the District to participate in the Transforming Maternal Health (TMaH) Model to advance innovative approaches to meet the maternal health care needs of District residents enrolled in the Medicaid program. Over a 10-year period, the Department of Health Care Finance (DHCF) and 14 other state Medicaid agencies will develop and implement payment and care delivery initiatives to support a whole-person approach to maternal health from the prenatal period up to one year after pregnancy.
“This funding will help us connect more families to the resources and support they need for a healthy pregnancy and postpartum experience,” said Mayor Bowser. “When we invest in maternal health, we are investing in stronger families, healthier communities, and a brighter future for our city.”
Starting on April 15, 2025, the Maternal Health Advisory Group will meet virtually every third Tuesday from 11am-12pm. Maternal Health Advisory Group meetings are open to healthcare professionals, individuals with lived experiences, community organizations, and other interested parties. DHCF will convene this group monthly to gather diverse perspectives and guidance to develop a whole-person approach to perinatal care.
Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health Set to Open on April 15
Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced that the new Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health, located on the St. Elizabeths East campus, will officially open on April 15, 2025. This new state-of-the-art hospital is part of the District’s collaboration with Universal Health Services (UHS) to create a comprehensive, integrated healthcare system serving communities East of the River and beyond.
“Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center represents my promise kept to Ward 8 and to all DC residents,” said Mayor Bowser.
The hospital will enhance access to quality health care and complement existing facilities such as Cedar Hill Urgent Care GW Health and the Whitman-Walker Max Robinson Center, which opened in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
